Warhammer: Kingdoms of Ind proper 8th ed update out now!

Done faster than expected, and I didn't even have to rely on Stefan to help finish it (some sacrifices to the Holy Toaster was enough). The book isn't quite finished just yet though, page numbers are yet to be added to the Summary page, and there will most likely be added another Special Character; these changes will probably be added in a week or so. Apart from that, the book is pretty much finished, sans all the spelling errors and bugs I'm sure are littered all over the place (volunteer proof-readers; go nuts!).

Clocking in at 86 pages, the complete Kingdoms of Ind book now finally has a complete background section along with the 8th ed update, so for those of you who have been wanting to read up on Ind, you can now finally do so! I went with a heavy emphasis on the Mahabharata and Ramayama för parts of the fluff, which I do think could have been Warhammer-ized a bit better; so I might go back to the fluff at a later point and improve upon it. Even so, Ind's history is far from being just a rehash or real India's history, instead drawing much more upon myths and fictional work. Overall, the book mixes Ancient India with the Vedic Pantheon, as well as a bit of the Mughal Empire and the Sikhs. Should be something for everyone, I hope.

This new update of the book features the following:
  • Background on the Indan society; the caste system, their religion, and their relationship with the rest of the world.
  • History of Ind; the war of the Deva, the creation of the Kingdoms, heroes of legends, civil war, war with Cathay and Tilea, Ind today, and a timeline.
  • Geography of Ind; descriptions of flora and fauna, the 7 kingdoms, and a map of Ind.
  • New units: Vishkanyas, Urumi Swordsmen, Snake Swarms, Thugees, Maiden Guard, Holy Warriors, Bengal Riders, Ganeshans. Some of the older units have been renamed and/or replaced by the new ones.
  • New Special Characters: Lord Darahma, Karishna, Urjana, Parashuruma (all based on famous Indian heroes). Akbar the Great, Farah and Malik are gone.
  • Full colour update, with tons of new artwork and fluff for the units.
  • Rules updates and changes to bring the army into 8th ed properly.

So there you have it, the finalized Kingdoms of Ind as promised. Only took about 2 years ;)
Enjoy, and let me know of any bugs and errors as usual!

  1. Amazing work. Congratulations for your efforts, I enjoyed every page.

Since you mention it in your post, I must say I agree with you, it could have been more "warhammer-ized". You do a great job when you imply that the asuras are actually the gods of Chaos and you beautifuly blend hindu religious concepts with the war against Chaos. But sometimes it is true that your fluff seems a bit "remote". Sometimes I don't feel I'm in the warhammer world, but in a great mythical India. If you eventually decide to complete it as you say, more interraction between Ind and the oficial warhammer fluff would be welcome.

Not that I'm complaining. Your rulebooks are great and the human ones are those I enjoy the most precisely because of the historical details. To be honest, this was the one I was expecting the most.

    Thank you for your efforts.

    1. Thanks! Which parts in particular did you find "too Indian"? The problem with Ind in general is that there are barely any mentions whatsoever in the rest of the army books, so telling more about Ind's conflicts between itself is a way of ensuring it doesn't go against the canon background. Though I am thinking of adding a bit on the war against the Dark Elves (along with maybe some of the mentions in the timeline), since they are actually mentioned as performing raids against Ind in their army book.

  2. That's exactly what I was thinking. Simply adding small bits of information about dark elves raids, the priests of Gilgadresh (who apparently can cause madness to their ennemies), the Ind red metal mentioned in the dark elves book, or that brahmin statues cause fear in chaos worshippers (we know that from the old ogre kingdoms rulebook) would place your fluff in a more vast world. Your indian fluff is great and very vivid. I dont' think there is anything too indian.

    1. I'm wrong about the priests of Gilgadresh. It is a reference to another event.

    2. All those things are actually mentioned in the timeline already, though I'll might expand upon them more in the main history section. Still have plenty of artwork I would like to use too! But that will have to be in their next rotation, the Halflings could really use some colour at the moment ;)

  3. The cover art is by Craig Mullins. Someone asked on the Warhammer Forums, but I'm not a member.

  7. Hi Mathias
I love your army books and this one in particular takes me back to reading Amar Chitra Katha as a kid.
I was recently listenining to an excellent Wood Elf lore video created by a YouTuber called Arch Warhammer. He drew the conclusion that Athel Loren is essentially a Realm of Chaos due to the large numbers of daemons (spites) fighting trees and time flowing strangely, even avatars of gods walking the world. It struck me that Ind, with the avatars, daemons and beastmen could also be a realm of chaos. Elves do not mutate easily but what would protect the mortals of Ind? Also are there Wood Elves in Ind? I'm thinking of some Avatar-style blue elves inspired by depictions of Rama, but perhaps not.
Whether you think it is a logic leap too far, do check out Arch Warhammer lore videos, because they are rather entertaining and informative.
